Weekly JOFO — No. 29, 2021

Weekly things I found worth sharing and why. If you know what I’m like, you might like these things too.

  1. I found Several Short Sentences About Writing by Klinkenborg to be such an insightful book about how writers see their craft. 1. It clarifies so many misconceptions I have as an amateur writer. According to Klinkenborg, writing is about noticing things and making a performance out of it. There is no such thing as a natural style of writing. Every single word has been selected to perform. Pick this up if you like Writing Down the Bones by Goldberg.
  2. Bird by Bird by Lamott is a classic. It’s a book about writing (another one!). I procrastinated from writing by reading it and listening to the accompanied podcast that came out recently.
  3. I’m using HelloChinese to return to practising Chinese daily. It’s a slow start, but the app is so well-developed. It has lots of videos of native speakers and a good and effective space repetition system.
